Beacon Theatre Workshop Presents:
A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
Directed by Alumna Kira Hawkridge
WOONSOCKET, R.I.,
Kira Hawkridge, graduate of Beacon Charter High School for the Arts’ class of 2008, and award winning Director of The Out Loud Theatre Company, will be directing Beacon’s upcoming production of Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Since graduating from Beacon, Hawkridge has been hard at work keeping Theatre Arts alive in the community. After graduating from Beacon, Hawkridge went on to pursue a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the University of Rhode Island. She has directed theatre productions at Brown University, the University of Rhode Island, and the Community College of Rhode Island. Currently, Hawkridge works as an Adjunct Faculty member and Guest Artist at CCRI, in addition to devoting herself to her work at The Out Loud Theatre Company.
Hawkridge brought her expertise back to Beacon after having directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream three times over the last three years. Each time, the show has been different with new and unexpected elements. Hawkridge is a movement and ensemble expert and is renowned for her work being experimental and avant garde. The audience will be immersed in the dream world that Shakespeare has created, surrounding four love stories, with wild and hilarious characters. As an ensemble show, all the players have an equal part in forming every piece of the show, movement, scenic, and performance. Things transform before your eyes, and characters can turn into scenery in an instant.
With Hawkridge taking the lead on this production, Jason Robert LeClair, Beacon’s Theatre Director, will be spending his time producing and designing the set. In addition, he will work to ensure the success of his Peer to Peer Shakespeare initiative. This year, the initiative will release digital and hardcopy educational materials about the play. LeClair is working to curate these curriculum materials and to provide schools with quality footage of the performance to be viewed in classrooms. Currently Mr. LeClair is raising funds to take the performance on the road to at least five schools. This effort is intended to expand the reach of the Peer to Peer Shakespeare initiative by taking the show on the road and providing schools with educational materials at no cost. Those interested in supporting LeClair’s efforts should email: jleclair@beaconart.org.
Students from 22 cities and towns across the state will participate in the production, bringing together multiple communities to celebrate theatre arts. Seating is limited. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for students. To purchase tickets, please visit: beacon.booktix.com.
